02 FAQ
Why is XTrack free?

I was looking for a free email tracker, and it simply didn't exist. There are some that say they're free, but they're limited to a certain number of tracks, and then you have to pay. There are some that say they're free, but you have to put their brand in the footer of your emails. There are some that are "free" but you have to sign up for the entire HubSpot sales CRM just to get the email tracker.

I built it for myself and decided to share it with the world because I figured there were others out there who were running into the same limitations. I'm simply relying on community support versus any sort of forced branding or charging a fee of any kind.

How does XTrack know when my email is opened?

When you choose to track a message, XTrack adds an invisible 1×1 pixel to it. The instant the recipient's email app loads that pixel, XTrack logs an open, with the time and a rough, city-level location. Any links in the email route through a redirect on our own domain, so clicks get logged the same way.

Open tracking is a signal, not a proof: image proxies, automatic pre-fetching, and images-off email apps can cause an early or missed open, so read it as a strong hint rather than a guarantee.

Which email services does XTrack work with?

XTrack is built for Gmail, as a Chrome extension. You write and send from Gmail exactly the way you do today, and the open and click status shows up right inside your Sent list, plus an optional desktop alert the moment a message is opened. Your recipients can be on any email app or device, with nothing for them to install.

Will the people I email know I'm tracking them?

They are not shown any notice. The pixel and link redirect are invisible, which is how email tracking works everywhere. It is also entirely your call: tracking is on by default, but a one-click toggle in the Gmail compose bar turns it off for any individual message, and XTrack never tracks an email you didn't choose to track.

Does XTrack track me, or sell my data?

No. XTrack only records activity on the emails you choose to track, and your Google sign-in is used purely to keep your data scoped to you. We never sell or share your data, or your recipients' data, with anyone for advertising, and there are no ads. Open and click events are automatically deleted after about 12 months. The specifics live in our Privacy Policy.

Is there a limit on how many emails I can track?

No. Every feature is included for everyone, with no cap on emails, opens, or clicks, no trial that runs out, and nothing locked behind an upgrade. Free means free.
